    On January 9 and 10, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis explores its big band roots. Partly inspired by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing & Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis’ Harvard University lecture, “Setting the Communal Table: The Evolution of the Jazz Orchestra”, delivered on September 26, 2013, the Birth of the American Orchestra concerts will explore the development of the American orchestra through the syncopated dance beats of New Orleans, innovative ensemble virtuosity, and the monumentality of swing and the blues.

And so you might have looked at an advertisement for the Panamanian singer Rubén Blades collaborating with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, as he is doing through Saturday night at the Rose Theater, and thought, sure, Latin jazz.

    The late Moacir Santos’ work illuminated the soul of Brazil, creating a truly national music, which has been recorded extensively by hundreds of artists. Melding Afro-Latin influences with improvisation and jazz harmony helped make Santos a genuinely original voice in Brazilian music. Santos was orphaned at an early age, and taken in by a family who helped him take music lessons. He continued to learn the music of Brazil throughout his formative years, garnering an encyclopedic musical knowledge. compositions.
